Meet our Digital Director: Chris Kemm

by Marisa Sanchez-Dunning

Meet Chris Kemm. Thompson’s Digital Director. Before we started the ever so slightly funny interview, he showed me his fresh, new Nikes. Which he then proceeded to change into while I started asking him the first question…

  • 1. How long have you been with Thompson and how did it come about?

“I have been with Thompson for about 3 years now. I started off at Brahm which is now known as Brass, then split off with my friend, Chris Skelton to set up our own digital agency called What Creative. It was a long road, but we reached a point where we needed to decide what we were going to do with the business; had we learned all we could have? Was it time to enter a new venture?
That’s what we ended up deciding to do, we joined forces with Thompson and have been happy families since.”

    2. What is the biggest lesson you’ve learned since being here at Thompson?

“Woah, that’s a big question… I think with the work being a lot bigger made it that much more challenging. Then I realised that no matter what size of company they work for, or experience they might have, people are just people. And if you understand people and what makes them tick, then you can generate great work. Also, managing a bigger team has been really rewarding. You have to understand that everyone is an individual and everyone responds to everything differently.”

    3. What is your favourite thing about working here?

“That I am surrounded by interesting and smart people. I really enjoy the mixture of skillset and the collaboration – we are all sat in the same space and that excites me.”

  • 4. What has been your favourite job to be a part of?

“My favourite job to work on has definitely been Mind Mate, which we won Gold for at this year’s Design Business Awards in London.  Through that project, it was nice to learn and find that through design, the world can really become a better place. We can not only generate content that looks nice and that people like to use, but that people use as a ‘go to’. It is really rewarding to know that what we put together truly helped and continues to help the young people of Leeds.”

    5. Obviously the most important question… favourite beer?

“I really like Highwire Grapefruit from Magic Rock Brewery, because it’s fruity but not sweet. Although, if I could only ever drink one beer it would have to be a pale ale of some sort; like North Bar’s prototype or something.”

    Hope you enjoyed!
